Water, watering everywhere?

July 19th, 2007 by colson

Unlike most communities in Minnehaha and Lincoln counties, Brandon doesn’t have mandatory watering restrictions. The city is asking people to voluntarily cut down on their water use. Have you conserved this summer or have you regularly watered your lawn?

This is on the City web site…so which is in effect???
Any why are we not restricting when everyone else is???

    Voluntary Watering Restrictions
The Brandon City Council is asking that the following voluntary water restrictions be followed by the residents of the City of Brandon. This is a precautionary measure to insure that water is available to every resident for essential use. These measures are NOT intended to reduce the total volume of water used, but to shave the daily peaks which are currently taxing our system.

    Even and Odd Day Watering:
Consumers having even numbered addresses may water on even numbered calendar dates and consumers having odd numbered addresses may water on odd numbered calendar dates.

    Watering During the Day:
No watering by anyone of grass, trees and shrubs between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily.

According to City Hall, watering is voluntary in Brandon because Brandon gets its water from the Split Rock Aquifer, which is plentiful. Sioux Falls gets its water from the Big Sioux Aquifer and the Big Sioux River. And Sioux Falls has tons more people than Brandon has.

For a few days recently, watering was not allowed in Brandon, but that was because one of the wells was being worked on. That job is complete, so the city is back on voluntary watering.

I hope this clears things up for you.

As for me, we don’t water, whether watering is restricted or not. Oh, I water the flowers, and sometimes I have vegetables so I water them, but we don’t water our lawn. In my opinion, it’s a waste of water, time and labor.

Thank you for the clarification. I agree watering lawns is unnecessary…let nature takes it coure…and of course..you then save time, labor and gas (lawn mower) lol

Let nature take it’s course eh??? So all these days with no rain and all the grass dries up and has a chance of setting on fire, that’s ok with you then????

  6. xxxx Says:

When’s the last time a lawn in Brandon started on fire?

Pretty green lawns watered more than once a week are a waste of a natural resource.

We sit on an aquifer yes, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t conserve.

Kudos’ to XXXX. I to, am a firm believer in water conservation. It wasn’t that many years ago that a person couple drink form most streams, rivers, or lakes in this country. Now look at them. Some are not fit to swim in, or eat the fish from them. We keep wasting one of our most precious natural resources, and this planet will be a total wasteland. Does anyone want this for our descendants?
