Bigger City Hall?

Council member Harry Buck thinks it’s too crowded in the current city council chambers.
He wants plenty of space available for the public to attend meetings, although sadly most citizens never do that.
It would be interesting to see if Brandon residents would support new digs for City Hall at the same time they are being asked to provide more school space.

That 66,000 they gave to the tennis courts could’ve probably put a new addition on the present city hall. They must’ve thought we needed the courts worse.
What ever happened to the new ball diamonds down by McCardy park? There’s a lot more kids playing baseball than tennis. How about the soccer fields? Again, more playing soccer.

What about plans for the old fire station? What is happening there? Wasn’t the police suppose to move in there and the city take back whole building? Or what about city council meetings in the old fire dept meeting room?

This is just another fine example of the old style of leadership. We have a volunteer fire department with a brand new multi-million dollar building, which gets used from time to time. We have a FULL time police department that has over grown the current building and also the city council has also out grown it current location. The city seems to find the moneys for what it WANTS and others are told “It’s not in the budget”. We need leadership that will take Brandon to the future. The way the city is growing, we will be playing catch up for along time.

I’m trying to sit at my desk and not respond to this issue.
I hope the city is responsible in there decisions. We as citizens of Brandon will need to decide on a 20 million school bond, and now the city wants more room. The city might do just like the school and ask for ,oh lets say 10 million and really build a nice city hall. Hopefully the city will do better on guessing what a new city hall will cost than they did on the Holly Blvd project that started out at less than 3 million and ended up over 5 million.
We in Brandon I think our to free with our tax dollar, we need to hold our elected people more responsible, ie the school. Asking for a blank check of 20 million for various projects over a certain period of time I feel is wrong. Ask as each project is needed.
I’m not making to much sence, I guess, just seems that everytime you turn around in Brandon the school, city, someone wants more. Good thing I love Brandon!

Yes it does seem a bit much doesn’t it. Just me, whoever you are. Stop at City hall and ask to look at the old fire hall, it looks pretty full when I drive by and the doors are open. I don’t know how long you have lived in Brandon but that building is “old” and in much need of repairs. A turd is still a turd no matter how much you polish it. Better money spent on another location, lets try something with PARKING this time.

God forbid, Brandon has something “old.” Nothin’ but the best and newest for us, regardless of cost.

Here’s a plan: Use a room in one of the school buildings for city hall’s public meetings. There’s lots of room.

Wake up….do you want your taxes to go up to pay for a shiny new building with parking so you won’t have to walk a half a block?

Wake up….you sound like one of our coucil people….$ doesn’t grow on trees. The city bought the building and they should use it. If you drive past and it looks full….what about the meeting room? Is that also full? Remodeling is a whole cost cheaper than new!!!!

I personally think that the need will come someday for a better / different / updated facility. I would hope that the city leadership would step forward to communicate to the community using current technology optins.
I think that televising the meetings would be good for the taxpayers of Brandon.
Some taxpayers think it is an old boy’s club making all the decisions. Well these people can watch the meeting to see exactly what transpired versus hear say from other people.
Can you imagine if the meetings were taped during the ambulance discussion? Or Sneakers issue?
I know that when we did this for the school board meetings it brought accountability to the meetings.
I know topics come up where the taxpayer, parents, and staff need to have the correct facts to make an informed judgement. Televising helps bring all this together.
Alliance Communications has been a great partner in the televising of school board meetings. I can’t imagine they would not partner with the city.
Great problems to have in a GROWING City!!

I have a solution, have the meetings at Sneakers, most of them hang there anyway.
August 25th, 2007 at 6:36 am
Nice one, Harry—typical Brandon response—let’s just throw some $$$ at it–the residents never say no!!! Chillin–that Sneakers must be the place to be–am told you can find many an educator there as well.

We should start a new program in Brandon. “Taxpayers….Just say no.” We need a Kermit Staggers on our council! Or how about a watchdog group, they could have meetings and everything.

#12 Have you seen any educators at Sneakers? Remember you need to say nice things or say nothing at all!
August 27th, 2007 at 11:55 am
Give our educators a break - after all, they are of age and surely can have a beer/drink or two without harming our children’s education. They are people too, just like any other working person. I believe they call this “socializing.” Just because they are at Sneakers, doesn’t necessarily mean they are drinking. Some folks can actually socialize with a soda.

Reading online today, I see the council voted to remodel the old fire station…Great!!! I thought that was the intent when they purchased it from the fire dept. Saves money and just next door or current city offices.
