Are laptops a good idea?

November 5th, 2007 by colson

A group of students, parents and educators have been studying whether or not the Brandon Valley school district should join a state program and purchase laptop computers for students to use.
Does this strike you as a valuable education tool or an extravagance that the district can’t afford right now?

As a recent BV grad, I would really have appreciated the laptops when I was in high school. It is very cumbersome to have to go to the library all the time to use a computer. I realize that some people may try to abuse this privilege, but don’t let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch. Also, we would not need the computer labs anymore, so they could be turned into badly needed classrooms. To the School Board and Administrators: get the students’ perspectives on this, not just teachers and parents.

Absolutely think they should. I agree with Been There. If we freed up space we wouldn’t need that bond issue for a while. Let’s keep our kids in the 21st century.

Rainbow - Unfortunately, a few open classrooms won’t solve the crowding problem at the high school. We’re still going to need the room, as the plans call for more than just a couple of classrooms - so get ready to vote Dec. 4 - no matter if you support the bond or disagree with it.

I think they are a good idea. Most businesses use PCs and the more exposure in school the better. Some colleges now require them. The purpose of high school is to help prepare you for life. State provided laptops avoids putting some kids at a disadvantage if they bought the wrong one. The big issue I see is game playing and internet browsing during class. I don’t know if the school can install software to control that or not.

Im voting towards this. I am a junior at BVHS and I think this would be amazing. Of course it would also separate the mature kids, and the immature kids. Of course as Talcott stated, teachers can look at the screens of the laptops from their own computer at anytime during the class, and those abusing it will be punished. I would enjoy this soo much. It is a pain to go all the way to the library for simple things and it would be alot easier to just do assignments on a laptop.
