Alderman Pastor Kloster

September 23rd, 2007 by Alica

As Kevin Kloster begins his duties as a Brandon City Council member, what advice do you have for him? He’ll finish out Kathy Ford’s term, which ends next spring. So this could be a six-month deal for him, or he might run for a term of his own next spring.

One piece of advice I would suggest is that before he vote on anything, to become familiar with the law that concerns that topic.

But I’d suggest that to any City Council member. Or any school board member. Or church council member. Or Chamber of Commerce board member. Or (insert group name here) board member.

My advice would be to say a prayer.

  2. always listening Says:

keep a low key on this one, he has a direct line to the big guy!!!

  3. anonymous Says:

How unbelievably insulting to say that he has “a direct line to the big guy.” Does that make him better than any of the rest of us believers? Personally, I think he has shown himself to be the most “un-pastoric” clergyman I’ve ever known. Knowing him, and his supporters they will see that as a compliment. Making my point exactly.
    It is sad.

  4. confused Says:

I think he should know the laws and why they exist. He should also be open minded and probably thick skinned!
There are lots of slings and arrows in these blogs, but there are also opinions that should be considered. He will hear opinions in the blogs he would never hear in a council meeting - and some things he will hear repeated in council meetings. Maybe he should wonder why people don’t bother to go to council meetings to voice their opinions.
I’ve never met the man, so allow me to hope for the best!

Congratulations Kevin! You are a man of God and I believe in you! I look foward to you being my Alderman. I know from issues past that you will follow your heart and always stand up for the citzens of this wonderful city. I look forward to working with you in the future. God Bless you for stepping up.

anoy– its a joke , chill.

In reply to #3: In regard to Pastor Kevin being “un-pastoric”, I disagree. If you mean that because he wears shorts to worship and has a beer on occasion, so be it. You obviously have never felt his love, prayers and support during a family members’ death from cancer. He treats all of the children in church like his own - my daughter couldn’t wait until Sunday to show him her lost tooth. His sermons are inspiring and relevant to today. I think he will be an asset to the city council.

  8. Student Says:

So the Rev Kev(as we call him) may not hold sermons in pews and/or sing in a holy harmonize. We have fun and I actually enjoy going to church. Theres two services so I dont have to worry about getting up early and you dont have the pressure to dress up. I hated my old church because it was so uptight. People have different views on how church should be.
I like this view and I think he’ll do an awesome job on council.

In reply to #7: I don’t care if he wears his birthday suit and drinks Mogan David wine. You and yours are not getting the big picture here! He was recruited for the City council, or shall I say hand picked. Agendas, agendas, agendas!! Now remember there is separation of church and state so I’m thinking that if you are going to refer to the new member, we should all just call him Kevin. I respect everyone’s opinion, but I’ll wait to make up my mind about him, based solely on his actions as interim council member.

  10. Citizen Says:

    To BrandonmomRN and Student,
I respect the fact you have a pastor you love and is great at his job, but your responses are exactly why it is necessary to separate church and state. Mom…so I’m to believe that because he is a caring man with a child that has cancer he is qualified and educated in government? You are probably a great nurse, but does that mean you’re a slam dunk on our city issues? No.
Do you know how he stands on the pertinant issues of Brandon? Now answer honestly…The Sneakers issue, the Holly Blvd past issue, the ambulance issue, more fees for parks from our contractors, the conditional use permits for daycares, etc. Heck, did you and he vote in April for the ambulance issue, did you attend the community forums?
You say his sermons are insiring and relevent, I think that’s fantastic. You also say he’ll be an asset to the council but named no reasons other than he’s a good pastor and nice person.

And to student…I’m sorry, but church has nothing to do with city government. I think you are fortunate also that you enjoy your church, but again your reasons aren’t relevant to a city council position.

I will watch how he votes and educates himself (because I don’t think he knows enough about the issues yet) before I make up my mind about whether he’s an effective alderman. I hope his is for the sake of our city.

  11. whodat Says:

He is pastor of a Methodist church–that alone tells you what kind of “Godly” man he is, a denomination that likes to “erase” the portions of the Bible it chooses not to follow, and then “re-write” them according to how they want it to read. Just ask around about his birthday gift to a female congregant a few years back…stunning! As for his new status, just more of the same good ol’ boy shenanigans that Brandon is known for.

  12. fj Says:

Apparently #11 is questioning the Godliness of all Methodists because he/she doesn’t agree with some of the teachings of the church that he/she perceives as improper. I’m sure he/she will also condemn all Catholics as ungodly because they have priests with sex problems. What denomination should a city councilperson be? Does it really matter? If you don’t like Kevin as a person, fine, but don’t trash the Methodists.
Every religion has skeletons in the closet, as I’m sure #11’s does as well.

  13. Citizen Says:

I REPEAT…this is why there is separation of church and state! Can you people leave religion out of it?

Our city council should have known better, now they can take the heat for their appointment.

  14. Informed Says:

Whodat - I am very much aware of the “birthday gift” he gave to this female congregate who also, in my opinion is short on morals herself, was VERY inappropriate and speaks directly to this mans character. And this council wants him to help decisions that affect each and everyone of us including our children and their children? NOT ME!

  15. golden rule Says:

FJ #12, Looks like there are some holier-than-thou posters amongst us who enjoy throwing stones at people. Sad. Seems to be a common theme on this Brandon Blog.

  16. Brett Bastian Says:

I think it would only be fair to give Rev. Kevin the benefit of the doubt with his appointmentto the city council. He has said he is a leader and we will soon find out where he stands on some of the difficult issues the council will be facing regarding the police dept, Sneakers bar, and the ambulance ordinance. If you are sick of the way things are done, stand up and do something about it. Support young local leaders who have the integrity to do what is best for the community; and not their friends. The only way to beat the current system is to make a strong showing at the polls this spring and vote for the person you feel will have the most integrity to get the job done.

  17. WOW Says:

Did Pastor step down from city councilor position?

  18. wow 2 Says:

yup he did…but he did get to join the boys first in voting on the ambulance. How nice!
