Christmas storm

December 22nd, 2009 by Alica

My family is going to celebrate Christmas on New Year’s day. We decided with the storm coming up, there wasn’t any point in even trying to travel. And most of us live in Brandon. “This isn’t the kind of storm where you go out to WalMart for a gallon of milk,” my brother said. “This is the kind of storm where you stay home or else you go out and die.”

Have you already changed your Christmas plans because of the weather forecast? Are you making any particular plans for what you’ll do if you get snowed in? Me, I can work from home if I have to. Also, I have three afghans I have to get finished. I’m also in the middle of a good book. (A biography of Paul Lynde.) So I have plenty to do. My husband plans to buy enough milk, bread and other staples today to get us through the weekend.

Stay warm, and keep blogging.

We were going to go to Mitchell today and come back on Friday so our kids could get ready for the band trip on Saturday. We decided to stay home. My wife is getting groceries and we are going to settle in for an old fashioned snowed-in Christmas. We all have our own books to read, (I’ve got a Robert Ludlum thriller). Stay safe, Everyone!

I only live 1 block from Casey’s but doubt they will stay stocked very long!

Stocked up at the grocery store, and the video store. The kids already have the notion that we won’t be able to go to Grandma’s. We’ve never had a Christmas at home for the kids, so this will be something new for all of us

Well, gosh, the sun was out today. Is there going to be a storm or not?

One positive that has come from staying home has been the excitement of seeing a sharped-shinned hawk appear at our birdfeeder the last few days. The kids grabbed their digital cameras and the video camera and got some good shots.

On Christmas, it landed on a chair on our deck just outside our kitchen-sink window, about six feet from me.

Saturday, it first perched in our maple tree then flew to the top of our feeder then to that same chair.

It’s been fun to learn about them on the internet. Not the same kind of story you find in a Little House book but a modern twist on being house-bound over Christmas!

It was nice to sit home and wait out the snow. Sort of cozy-like. My husband spent a lot of time moving snow off the driveway, but he said it was the fluffy kind, so it wasn’t too bad. Also, the temperature was moderate. It was sort of the Christmas snow I remember as a kid.

Can someone tell me when the city plans to clear the rest of the snow off of the roads. 2 feet from the curb is still piled high with snow. Not to mention the bike path sidewalks are still covered. As a home owner we are required to clear the snow in a certain amount of time. Either 48 or 72 hrs. What gives

20″ of snow, 10 degrees, and you are going worried about the bike paths and a little snow on the side of the road! Give them a chance. They worked their tails off so you can get to Walmart!
Working on Christmas day, and not home with their family. Give it a rest and be thankful for what we have. IT IS THE GIVING SEASON. NOT THE COMPLAINING SEASON.

  9. New to Brandon Says:

I so agree with #8 , there were so many streets in Sioux Falls that didn’t get cleared until days after the snow stopped. We are very lucky in Brandon to be able to drive anywhere in town. Thank You to all the city workers for working every day through the holidays !

  10. BV since 1980 Says:

Why can’t the street department start plowing out the town earlier than 6 am? Most of the smaller towns around the area start at 2 am. I leave for work by 6 am and many times have finished cleaning up the driveway, just to have the city come around and fill me in. Then I have to again cleanup (if I have time) in my work clothes.

Sounds like you want to pay more taxes! I think they do a great job. Sorry it doesn’t work with your schedule.

As I write this,I hear the humming of the City’s plows doing their job. After finding out that the City workers start their long and tedious snowplowing at 4a.m. so you all can get to your jobs, where ever you work. Yes, I know that this is their job and they get paid for it but I think that if you had to spend 10 to 12 hour a day over the Christmas storm, six days in a row you wouldn’t be complaining about having to redue your driveway, but so does everybody else. WE all groan. Their job is to make it safer for all of us to travel wherever we have to go. LET ME REMIND ALL OF US AGAIN, SIX DAYS IN A ROW INCLUDING CHRISTMAS! I watched the crawls across the television this morning and not once did I see that any town was clearing their streets at 2am. So please remember snow alerts, please take all cars off of the streets so the roads can be plowed side to side ,DoNot blow snow back into the street after it has been plowed and giving gestures to the drivers is unacceptable and childish. I would really like to thank each and everyone of the men who I feel have worked very hard on clearing the streets for us. I am very grateful!!!!!!!
