City newsletter

July 23rd, 2008 by Alica

The Brandon City Council is considering starting a quarterly city newsletter. This would be a paper document that would be sent out to residents.

About 4,000 newsletters would be produced quarterly. Assistant City Administrator Lanning estimates the quarterly cost between $1,500 and $2,000. The cost would cover postage, printing and staff salaries, for example.

Content would include updates on street and other building projects, for example. I imagine it also could include contact information for various city offices, times and dates of council and committee meetings, and other general information.
What do you think of this idea? The school already sends out a newsletter called the Up Front. Do you read that? If the city sent out a newsletter, would you read that?

All city information already is online at www.brandonsd.com. Do you ever look at that?

If the city does make a newsletter, what types of things would you like to see in it?

I think a newsletter is a good idea, however I don’t like the idea of the associated mailing costs. That’s $8000 that can be spent somewhere else.

How about a quarterly ad in the Challenger when the newsletter is available online??

People who are not interested in the goings on down at city hall won’t be persuaded by a mailing. If they are interested, they will view the information on the city website and may even find a lot of other information that is useful to them.

And yes, I view all the information on the city website.

How about some “little known facts” such as the tree planting rules or laws from the PD or changes made to laws and ordinances. Upcoming events. How to’s.

I think the newsletter is a great idea. Perhaps they can place it in the water bills instead of a seperate mailing?

Agreed #2. A seperate mailing is a waste of $$$$. Good idea on the newsletter. It would really be nice if it was informative (hot topics, citizens questions answered by appropriate city employee, etc.) Too many newsletters are just an empty waste of trivial info that no one is interested in.

The city website is factual and not really “everyday” kind of news.

I feel that the city could better spend $8000. If it’s there intent to better inform people about issue’s have a program on the spiltrock station. People are not interested in what goes on at city hall until they have something to B—h about. My opinion, waste of money.
