Drive or street?

May 27th, 2008 by Alica

The sign at either end of Maureen Drive says it is a drive. But on the city map in the most recent copy of the Brandon phone book, it is called a street.

Maureen isn’t the only street that has an identity crisis. Heatherwood is either a drive or a street also, depending on who you ask. And there are other addresses in town with the same confusion. Do you live on one of these streets? Do you really know if you live on a drive or a street? Have you had any problems because of the confusion?

    What about an avenue?

The problem seems to concern drives only. The story “Maureen Drive is still a drive” here on www.brandoninfo.com explains more fully.

I live on Kirkwood, it is 2 blocks long, I havn’t looked lately, but I do believe the north sign says blvd and the south says ave.

When I put my address on anything I put Blvd, I don’t know why I just always have. maybe cause I am closer to that sign? LOL!

If I try google or mapquesting my address it comes up as street, the sign at either end of the block reads dr. I’ve even had mail returned addressed to drive. When/who updates the ‘official’ records?

If your street originally was named a Drive, it’s almost certainly still a Drive, legally. The only way it would change would be if the city enacted an ordinance to legally change the name. If that had happened, you would have been informed by the city.

Somewhere along the line, someone at the city started calling all north-south streets “Avenues” and all east-west streets “Streets,” even though their legal names were not that. Somehow, and nobody seems to know how, the post office, and then the county assessor’s office, started calling them Avenues and Streets also, even though that wasn’t their legal name.

I checked with the county registrar of deeds, and the name of only one Drive, that we could find, was legally changed to Street. And that is Lark Street (formerly Lark Drive).

I hope that helps answer your question.
