Early graduation

Earlier this week, a dozen Brandon Valley seniors graduated a semester earlier than the rest of their class. Some plan to spend extra time working to save up money for college this fall. Others are starting college early. Others may have other plans.
Early graduation at Brandon Valley is allowed for students who complete the required 22 course credits early. They must tell administration of their intentions by the beginning of their junior year.
What do you think about early graduation? My husband and daughter were both only 17 when they graduated at the regular time. Finishing high school a semester early would have had them graduating even younger. Some kids just aren’t ready emotionally to take on the responsibility of being out in the “real world” so young.
On the other hand, my birthday fell so I was one of the oldest in my graduating class. If I’d graduated a semester early, I still would have been 18. I already was accepted to my college of choice, and I also had wedding plans by then. My last semester of high school felt like I was just marking time.
What are your thoughts. Do you know anyone who graduated early? How did that affect the next few years of their lives? Did they regret their choice or celebrate it?

It is nice that early graduation is offerred in Brandon. It is a right decision for some kids and not for others.
The only real negative is why, oh why are we in such a rush to get kids to grow up so fast and out into the “real world”? We also do this by pushing kids in high school to take AP/College classes in high school so they get done with college earlier. Taking AP courses to broaden the mind is great though.

Early graduation has been around for awhile it was an option when i was in high school 20 years ago. It’s nice that it can still be used. I’m all for early graduation if not for the simple fact that College registrations generally start in the fall, and with an early HS graduation it can give you some time off. Let the brain rest a bit. Too often society looks down on those that wish to take a year off after graduation. After 12 straight years of schooling its nice to have a break, plus i feel it can give an indvidual a much better idea of what they want to be when they grow up.
