Elective classes

January 21st, 2008 by Alica

What elective classes would you like to see Brandon Valley offer? The high school offers electives such as astronomy, anatomy and tragedies in history. Middle school students have been able to choose skiing as an exploratory class for a couple of decades.

Does the school offer the kinds of electives that cater to your child’s personal interests? What elective classes have your children enjoyed the most?

I think it would be neat for them to offer something in the realm of a self defense type course. Maybe a PE elective or through continuing ed. It would be a nice mind reliever to send a child off to college or life with something like this….

A leadership elective class would also be helpful!

I would have loved to take a European history class. I know that a World history class was added this year, but a class that focuses on the history of a single region/continent would have been extremely interesting. French would be nice, too.

I’m all for additional public speaking instruction in schools. It seems these days that no matter what your occupation, you will end up having to make a presentation at some point.

I’ve sat through too many presentations made by bad speakers. Worse is when they begin their presentation by saying they are not a good speaker.

Good public speaking takes education and a fair amount of practice. Let’s see more classes to that end.

The Middle School has done away with exploratory/mini courses this year! The only electives middle school students have are band, chorus, or orchestra. No grades are given in these classes. A progress report is sent home. The skiing adventure takes place after school - is not part of the exploratory/mini course — as it does not exist. Would be nice to see the mini courses reinstated at the MS level.

    Thank you for the clarification.

I always thought Latin would be useful for biology majors - most scientific names are Latin based.

Maybe offering CPR/AED training to students as part of their PE class at either the middle school or high school level could save a loved ones life someday?

It is unfortunate that the MS discontinued the mini courses. They were a fun little informational perk for the kids. The kids enjoyed them and also learned some skill/hobbies they probably wouldn’t have been exposed to without the courses…..I imagine itmight not have been very fun for some of the staff though!
