Emergency gear

January 29th, 2008 by Alica

One winter some years ago, my brother got stranded on the side of the road during a snow storm. He knew he wouldn’t be able to get out until the snow stopped, but he wasn’t worried as he had his extreme-weather sleeping bag with him. So he crawled into it and hunkered down for the duration. If he hadn’t had that gear, though, we might have ended up with a Mike-sickle.

What emergency gear do you carry in your vehicle during the winter months? Extra socks? Candy bars? A quilt, blanket or sleeping bag? Candles?

Do you have one of those winter kits that contains flares, a shovel and such? Or do you put together your own kit?

If you do carry emergency gear, have you ever had to use it? What stories do you have to tell?

I really don’t want to say out loud that I have an emergency kit, and have never had to use it since I put it in my trunk. Before that though, if it weren’t for the kindness of strangers…However, I was told at one time by Highway Patrol that you should not carry emergency stuff — blankets, food, flares, etc.–in your trunk, unless you can get to your trunk from the inside of your car.

I put one of those sleeping bags rated to -10 behind my seat during the winter. I actually have a store bought candle in a tin can with matches in the glove compartment- I think the matches would work (we bought it 10+ years ago). I have the folding shovel in my trunk - not too sure how good it would be.I always have a cell phone and my best safety item is the sense to stay home if the weather looks real bad.
