Firearm rights

February 20th, 2013 by Alica

A legislative committee in Pierre this week defeated a bill that would have prevented mentally ill people from buying firearms.

Proponents of the bill said folks with mental problems could be too dangerous to own guns.

Opponents said the bill would deny people firearms even if they had never committed a crime?

Which way do you lean on this issue? Do you think the legislative committee made the right choice?

Mentally Ill persons or persons who have been instituted due to mental health issues should not be allowed to purchase fire arms. Background checks need to be more indepth, but if the legislature won’t pass something as simple as this record keeping would be (as other states have this in place), I guess we’ll just have to live (or die) with mentally ill persons being allowed to purchase weapons.

While I agree with you 100%, if you read the bill it was poorly written. So in reality, the concept is correct but the poorly written bill is why this was defeated.

Highjacking this sight with a question. Why does Blaine Jones’ facebook page list him living in Harrisburg while he is serving on the Brandon city council? How long has this been going on and why is it allowed? I am confused.

Is it possible that there is a Blaine Jones that also lives in Harrisburg? I’m one of the only people in the world without a facebook account so I can’t help you verify anything. Jones is a fairly common last name, so my thought would be maybe there is another person with the same name??

As far as the legislative bill, I haven’t had time to research what it said, but my thoughts on the idea of the bill are torn–I agree with the idea, but it would have to be very carefully written because it would be quite easy to take the right to own a weapon away from someone who should be able to own them. What really disturbs me is that this bill is coming from the tragic events that happened in Newtown, CT. No I don’t want anything like that happening again–but they weren’t HIS guns. They were registered LEGALLY to his mother–which means this bill would have done nothing to protect anyone–the law would have had to prevent his mother from owning guns.

It is the same Blaine Jones. It has his picture.

Regarding Mr. Jones, I suggest you message him on Facebook with your question.

Thank you all for your input on the gun issue. It is a good discussion.

  7. for what it's worth... Says:

…people who have been adjudicated mentally ill are already prohibited from owning firearms under existing federal law. (18.USC.922)

Alica-I am very surprised at your suggestion for me to contact Blaine Jones. This is not an issue between Blaine Jones and myself. It is an issue for EVERY citizen of Brandon, especially those citizens that elected Blaine to represent them. I would think that the Brandon newspaper reporters would be all over this and check out why this is being allowed to happen. I like Blaine and think he does a good job so I am in no way trying to bring him down. I am just confused why he is being allowed to sit on a city council of a town he doesn’t even live in.

  9. Blaine Jones Says:

Thank you Alicia for bringing it to my attention. My FB paged was hacked about two months ago and I did not notice it had been changed to Harrisburg. I am still a very proud member of Brandon.

Let’s get a thread talking about how there’s absolutely no space at the middle school to pick up kids after school. And how people are backed up into the street and don’t know how to drive.

Just curious what is up with our city leaders and home foreclosures? Ie mayor Beesley and councilman Bob bruning? How about a thread on that?

  12. Alica Says:

To #11: I’m not familiar with this. Could you elaborate?

  13. Anonymous Says:

It’s public record, look it up Alica.

  14. Anon Says:

#11 I saw this as well on the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s website. It makes one wonder, if they have difficulty managing their own money/household WHY are we allowing them to manage our tax dollars and run the city? BTW-the Mayor’s house sale was cancelled so he must have figured something out. Also, it may be possible that Bob’s business ran into ttrouble with the economic situation. I have no information on that but am trying to give him the benefit of doubt. They are both great guys. A tough situation.

  15. resident Says:

#11 you do bring up a good point. If they are not able to pay their mortgage what makes them qualified to make financial decisions for the city?
Regardless of whether they are great guys or not. Good question.

  16. resident Says:

    Correction in reply to #14.

  17. oogie Says:

    #s 11 and 14,

    You’re jack**ses and trolls.

You run for office in this town and balance your schedule according to the citizens’ liking. The rest of Beesley’s life is his business. Stay out of it.

  18. Brian Bruning Says:

#’s 11,14,&15- It really is a testament to your character, or rather lack thereof, to so BRAVELY (sarc) comment anonomously on a situation you clearly have no factual knowledge about. Making disparaging (anonymous) comments smacks of classlessness and cowardice, and to even infer any type of public impropriety is irresponsible at best.
Should you ever find yourself facing trying, unfortunate circumstances, one could only hope that you would face them with as much grace, dignity and class as Bob and Marilyn Bruning do. Rather than sling snark from a keyboard, you should thank the Brunings and the Beesleys for their service to their city and neighbors, sympathize with their plight, and wish them well.
And before you so cavalierly call for a “thread” of speculation about a situation to which you have no knowledge, ask yourself how well your own life would hold up to public scrutiny.

Brian Bruning (not annonymous), Bob and Marilyn’s son, Sioux Falls.
