Firing policy

On Feb. 26, the Brandon Valley school board will consider changing its firing policy for teachers who don’t have tenure.
Right now, the policy is to give the employee a reason he or she is being let go. But the school board wants to update the policy to match state law 13-43-6.3, which requires the superintendent to give written notice that the teacher’s annual contract is not being renewed, “but is not required to give further process or a reason for nonrenewal.”
Superintendent David Pappone said new teachers are on a three-year probationary period at Brandon Valley before they are tenured.
If you want to learn more or voice your opinion, you can attend the next school board meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, in the middle school library. Or, you can post your opinion on this blog. Or both.

Welcome to South Dakota, right to work state.
this sounds just like places I have worked before NO job Security.
You can be fired for Driving a purple car to work and your boss doesn’t like it.
Its to bad unions don’t fight harder for workers in this state.
its tough enough to make ends meet and no laws to protect you at work.

I worked at jobs like this. Most employers are decent, but when it comes time to firing people, they’re jerks. I worked at a job where a guy got fired. He was always on time, and always a good worker, but nobody told him why he got fired. “State law” everyone said. Just because it’s a law doesn’t make it ethical or moral. I think if you fire someone, it shouldn’t be a surprise to the person getting fired. They should have been educated as to how to improve, and if they fail, it will be pretty obvious.
Especially teachers. When you fire a teacher, shouldn’t that person know how they screwed up so they don’t do it again?
Right to work, like the person above said, is such a crock. On paper, it says that employment is at will and either party can end the work relationship at any time, for any reason, or for no reason. I quit a crappy job once after I didn’t get paid what I was supposed to. When I went in to get my final check, the boss was trying to yell at me for not giving him two weeks. But this is the same guy who was firing people for no reason with no notice. I wanted to say, “Works both ways, sucker.” But I just got the check and said that this wasn’t the place for me.
The only thing you cannot be fired for in SD is tobacco use off the job. Bizarre state.
