Herb garden

June 11th, 2007 by Alica

The flower gardens are really starting to look nice in front of the houses. My neighbor has a nice rose bush.

This year I am trying to grow some herbs. I have rosemary, basil and peppermint. I’m not sure I should have planted the peppermint right next to the basil. The mint leaves sort of smell like basil.

Have you had any luck with herb gardens? Can you give me any advice? Right now the herbs are outside in a pot, but I’d like to bring them indoors for the winter.

Alica, I have a large, organic perennial herb garden. I rotate in several varieties of basil, summer and winter savory, Italian parsley, and assorted other annuals. As for my perennials, I have galic and onion chives, a oregano “bush”, bergamot, French tarragon, chocolate, spear, orange, pepper, and Italian mints. I also have 2 kinds of thyme, 2 kinds of rosemary, anise, lemon balm, borage, dill, marjoram and edible flowers. What do you need to know hahah :)

The mint will take over if you don’t rein it in. As for basil, as soon as you see a flower head develop, pop it off, or it’ll quit bushing out, and you want it to bush out, not make flowers. Pot up your rosemary at the end of the season, it’s not hardy enough for here. Depending on the basil, the flavors are all different. I am also a heirloom gardener. All my toms, peppers, and other garden veggies are all heirloom. If you ever want to come over and take a peek at mine, or want recipes, let me know!

Amy, Thanks very much for the information. I have noticed that the mint is doing very well, so I’ll watch it and cut it back as necessary.

Right now I have my three herbs all in the same pot but it’s outside. I thought I could bring the pot indoors when the weather gets cold.

I would love to look at your herbs and plants sometime. You can e-mail me direct at apthiele@argusleader.com if you wish.

    Thanks again.

Alica, I have a few herbs growing in pots on our deck, just off of our kitchen. I find that I am more apt to walk a few steps to there instead of all the way out to the garden to get some fresh herbs. Peppermint to add to black or green tea, Sweet Basil for Italian dishes, Chives for just about anything, Dill for fish. I find it easier to move them into and out of the shade of the eaves when the days get so beastly hot. Some herbs tolerate sun and heat more than others. Also, I can keep them away from each other to prevent cross-flavoring. I Googled “compatible herb planting” and got a number of hints as to which herb to plant next to what other plant.
