Holly Boulevard signage

January 2nd, 2008 by Alica

What do you think about the new signs on Holly Boulevard? Signs for the bike path might be confusing. Motorists might think the small stop signs at the intersections, meant for the bike path, are meant for them.

Have you been tempted to stop at an intersection when you didn’t need to?

Jim Olsen, project manager for the Holly Boulevard project, says all the bike path signs are there by federal requirement, since federal money helped build the path.

The 20 mph signs are temporary but will be replaced with 30 mph signs when the project is closer to being completed, Olsen said.

Way too many signs! It actually is visually distracting as well as ugly. The other blog site says they are required by the feds (safety reasons I’m sure). Understandable, but still unattractive.

I also think they are confusing in certain places, like the turning lanes. I wonder if some of them can be removed, ?? the “no motorized vehicle” ones. Also, could the word “stop” be painted on the sidewalk instead of having the signs? Finally, does there really need to be “no parking” signs? It seems obvious to me that there is no parking…..

It was silly to make it a bike path in the first place. Do they really think people are going to use it as such if they have to stop every block?

Where else will you see a bike path with a 100 signs on it?

    I agree, it’s very distracting.

They won’t last more than a year or two before they’re knocked down.

Do you get a ticket if when you are on a bike and you elect not to stop?????

  4. Anonymous Says:

The bike path along Sioux Blvd. has the same sings and no said anything about them.

  5. anonymous Says:

Sioux doesn’t have even close to the same number of signs.

I think there is way too many signs and it is confusing. I get the fact that the little signs are for the bike path but my grandfather didn’t. He stopped at every one. He made a comment about it when he got to my house, he felt like an idiot when I told him they were for the bike riders.

How many times do you think we are going to be driving behind elderly people that don’t get it? No offense to them, my grandfather is all completely still there, but it confused him.. (I didn’t not mean the still there part to offend anyone. So please don’t allow it)

And I am curious too, If I don’t stop my bike at every stop sign do I get a ticket?

federally mandated or not it’s a waste of resources, time and money. It’s overkill plain and simple just like so many other things. Wasteful spending at the federal level all the time. Why is it we just can’t keep it simple anymore????

  8. a tax payer Says:

Write your Congress people! Vote for people who can change the rules! When you get Federal Grant Money to pay for these things, it comes with strings attached. The signs are one of the strings. Just remember, it is your federal tax money that has come back to our city, and not being spent in some other part of the world.

  9. anonymous Says:

My point is it shouldn’ve have strings (pork) attached. Imagine how much more “bike path” we could’ve had without all the stupid signs (that will be ignored anyway)

I think the signs are excessive as well. Hey, when are we going to get a sidewalk for Aspen Blvd too????

    To #6 Anonymous:

Would you please call me at 331-2376, please, or e-mail me at apthiele@argusleader.com? I am working on a story for the Brandon Valley Challenger about the Holly Boulevard signage and would like to include your grandfather’s story as an example of how the signs could cause confusion.

Or, if anyone else has a story to tell about the signs, or has any comments, good, bad or indifferent, would you please call me so I can include you in my story? (I can’t just copy from the blog. I need to use real names in the story.)
    Many thanks.

Why are the horizontal street light bars on Holly and Sioux so short??? They aren’t even over the roadway.

  16. Silly Says:

My spouse would agree 100% with you #15. The posts need to be extended out so they match with the lanes. Maybe extentions are on order - we can hope! It would certainly be less confusing! Hopefully there aren’t any accidents because they are so short…..

  17. Eric Thompson Says:

The signal poles that are on Sioux and Holly right now are only temporary. New street lights will be put up at that intersection and the poles from there are going to replace the poles at Splitrock and Holly.

  18. Silly Says:

Thanks Eric for the update. That will be a welcome addition at those intersections.

  19. 4Ever in Brandon Says:

Eric #17, will there be turn arrows installed at Sioux and Holly?

  20. Eric Thompson Says:

    Yes

  21. Silly Says:

Does anyone know if some of the small stop signs can be replaced with “STOP” painted in on the sidewalks? Do the Feds allow this? Yes, I realized this brings on another set of problems with maintenance but could be an alternate solution. Anyone else with ideas?

  22. anonymous Says:

I had an out of town visitor today. She asked me about all the stop signs. She asked if she was supposed to stop at every one, and said she hadn’t been sure so she did. PS…she’s not elderly either. I like “silly’s” idea, paint them on.
