Holly Boulevard

May 14th, 2007 by Alica

One of the main streets in town will be torn up most of the summer. There was a lot of debate over how to improve Holly Boulevard, a plan was fashioned, and now construction is set to begin.

Let’s keep track of progress on this blog. I’ll post updates on progress, and anyone can post stories about experiences they have driving through (or around) the construction. This category will be on the blog until the project is complete.

How do you feel about the project?

My name is Eric Thompson and I am with the contractor that has the bid for Holly Boulevard. I will be checking this blog occasionally, so if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I am expecting the construction to begin next Monday at the intersection of Sioux and Holly. My intention is to work in that intersection and to get permanent surfacing back in place to reopen that portion. This will allow all traffic on Sioux to be on permanent surfacing within a month. Please drive carefully through the project for your safety and that of my employees. Thank you.

Eric, thanks for being proactive and willing to use this blog as a way of keeping us informed. Looking forward to this finally becoming a reality!

  3. Jana Says:

I agree with Charles, fantastic you will use this blog and give answers to questions and concerns. It will be a long, noisy, dirty summer for us. We live along Holly and can’t wait for this project to be complete! I’m staying positive about the outcome and look forward to the improved Holly Blvd.

  4. Angi Says:

Eric, How torn up do you expect to have the intersection at Sioux/Holly torn up the weekend of Memorial Day…..graduation weekend???? I would like to tell people who may be attending my daughter’s open house at the fire station if they need to take an alternate route. Thanks

  5. Terin Corp. Says:

We will have the intersection open to traffic on gravel form the west, north and south and for east bound we will be detouring traffic north one block and then over to Cardinal then back to Holly.

  6. Holly Resident Says:

    Eric,
What does “silt fence” mean on the stakes?

  7. Terin Corp. Says:

That is where silt fence will be placed. Silt fence is the black fabric that is tied to wire mesh and then strung in between fence posts. It is placed in areas that the engineer thinks that we may have an erosion problem to prevent soil washing out.

What is the time line for the street? What is the plan of attach to do it in sections or start at one end and work to the other? In other words should I plan on not using portions of the steet through out the summer or plan on not using the street at all? Please give time lines and completion dates. Thank you.

  9. Terin Corp. Says:

We will be working in the Sioux and Holly intersection for the next three weeks and then open it to traffic on permanent surfacing. Next Wednesday we will be closing Holly between 1st and 7th and that section we be under construction until mid August and the construction will then proceed east to Splitrock until around Mid September. After that section is finished we will then do the section between Sioux and 1st and finish some time in late October. We are planning on opening sections of Holly on gravel where possible otherwise only cross traffic will be allowed. The section of Holly between 1st and 7th is tied to a August 15th completion date to accomodate the schools and that is why we are going to that section next.

  10. Alica Says:

Eric, thank you very much for replying to all the questions. It helps readers know what is going on. It should help your crews too, because if the public is informed, it’s more likely they will take alternate routes as they travel through Brandon.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the new Holly Boulevard when it’s completed this fall.

  11. Wondering Says:

How many, if any, trees will be removed along Holly?

  12. Terin Corp. Says:

Other than a few trees that are going to be moved by the landowners, we are removing 20 trees along Holly Boulevard. The trees that are to be removed should have an orange “x” on them. If there is a specific location you are interested in let me know.

  13. Wondering Says:

    Eric,
There are no trees marked along Holly with X’s. (as of 5-29) I’m interested in the area between the Dentist office and Main. Do you have an email address you could post?

  14. Terin Corp. Says:

There are no trees to be removed between Robin and Main. My email address is ethompson@terincorp.com. Also, weekly updates are posted on the City of Brandon’s website.

  15. Wondering Says:

Thank you for your response Eric.

  16. Cindy Says:

Why are there no signs coming into Brandon from SF on Rice street telling you about the construction? I think more notice is needed for truckers to tell them it is closed.

  17. Terin Corp. Says:

I believe there are road work ahead signs west of Brandon, which the plans call for. The trucks that enter Brandon from the west are supposed to stick to the established truck detour, taking them to Aspen. I will talk to the project engineer to see if they think more advance notice is needed.

  18. Wondering Says:

Is is possible to get a little gravel put in place right where the lanes coming in from the West are narrowed? Where the old shoulder is, there is some pretty good dropoffs/holes.

  19. Terin Corp. Says:

We opened up the two lanes going west of town back to the original lanes and are going to patch the holes. I don’t see any more closures that will last more than just during the day.

  20. Wondering Says:

Terrific. And thanks for grading the gravel between Sioux and Robin (or Carninal) I saw the area where the road is being cut down. I think lowering it is going to be a good thing!

  21. Cindy Says:

I drove from Sioux Falls last night and there are no signs that say construction until you get to Brandon. If you want to eliminate truck traffic, you may want to put construction signs at 121, Eros road, Timberline (whatever name you want to give this road) or at 6 mile road. This gives the trucks a chance to get on the interstate and not try to get through the construction.

  22. dh Says:

Eric, Where exactly will the street lights be moved to?
    Thank you for the updates!

  23. Terin Corp. Says:

There are 55 new street lights being installed along the project. There are 8 on top of signal poles and 47 stand alone ones. They are staggered down the project on both sides of the road. If you need a specific location, call my mobile # at 605 310 1147.

  24. dh Says:

I think I may be confusing street lights with traffic lights. Where will the traffic lights be located? Thank you again!

  25. Terin Corp. Says:

Traffic Signals are going to be installed at Sioux & Holly, Pasque Flower (New Grade School Entrance)& Holly , 6th (New Middle School Entrance) & Holly.

  26. Jana Says:

    Terin,
Is is possible for you to keep the gravel sprayed down for dust? I know some counties use some sort of formula for a few county roads now. The dust is carried all the way up to Main and holy cow, it’s pretty nasty. Thanks

  27. Terin Corp. Says:

What you are referring to is Chloride Water. We have already put some down and it has worn off from the number of cars using it. We are planning to put traffic onto the new concrete at Sioux and Holley this week and then we are going to spray chloride water again.

  28. Jana Says:

Terrific. It seems the stuff I drive on in Lincoln county ls more oily perhaps. It’s been on for a couple of months now and still doing the job.

  29. Wondering Says:

How far behind is the project? If you note the first post it says Sioux would be on permanent surfacing by June 21st. It’s hard to imagine the whole section between schools will be poured by school (6 weeks) It’s taken a over a week just to pour one corner and it’s not even done yet.

  30. Terin Corp. Says:

We have had some utility issues in the Sioux Intersection that have taken longer to resolve. Also there was a design change in the intersectio that added an additional lane to the north side. So we are behind on the intersection. The phase 2 section is proceeding well. We are placing asphalt in the grade school today and working on curb & gutter in the middle school parking lots so the off street work is coming to an end. The underground work and grading on the street itself is completed just west of 5th ave. and gravel is going in today and tomorrow. Concrete will start in that section from 1st to 5th next week and will go considerable faster than the intersection. We still are on schedule to make the 15th Completion date on that section.

  31. Alica Says:

Hooray, hooray, we got to drive on pavement today! Thank you a lot for the update, and keep up the good work.

  32. Terin Corp. Says:

The intersection of 1st and Holly will be restricted to one way traffic tomorrow afternoon and closed on Saturday the 22nd of September
