Lawn watering

May 8th, 2008 by Alica

The city is asking Brandon residents to voluntarily restrict their lawn watering this season. The city is asking people who live at even-numbered addresses to water only on even-numbered days, and likewise with odd-numbered addresses.

This policy is more liberal than the policy in Sioux Falls, where water restrictions will be enforced year-round.

At my house, we don’t water our lawn at all. Our reasoning is that the more lush the lawn is, the more work it creates. And we prefer leisure time over yard work. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. It seems like there is always a long list of household chores to do, and making a point of adding one more chore to the list, especially a self-perpetuating one, seems counterproductive.

Do you water your lawn? If so, will you follow the odd-even system?

We enjoy a green lawn so we water regularly. Besides, mowing is good exercise and is a good way to unwind mentally after a long day. We have a sprinkler system and find the even-odd easy to comply with. We also have a rain detector that shunts the system so it won’t water after we get rain or during a rain storm.

To #1: Thank you for posting. With my husband’s hayfever and my allergies, we tend to be indoor people. I do like to walk barefoot in a plush lawn, though. Reminds me of when I was a kid.

    Enjoy your lawn this summer.

Looking at what our neighbors in Sioux Falls are spending to get water from the Missouri River, and the infrastructure that’s required to get it from there to here, I think it’s wasteful to water grass extensively. Today we are thinking about preserving fossil fuels as gas prices skyrocket; I think the day will come that we get serious about how we use water resources too.

#1 — it sounds like you are being responsible with your lawn watering. Thank You. #3 -I agree. We are so dependent on fuels because of our “gotta have it” attitudes, I wonder when that attitude will get us into trouble with other resources as well.

We only water a small section that is used for lawn games etc. and flowers. I’m not willing to pay the water bill for a perfectly green lawn. Water is a precious resource that I don’t want to waste.
