Legislature convenes

January 7th, 2008 by Alica

The 83rd session of the South Dakota Legislature will convene tomorrow. A story today on www.brandoninfo.com says school officials will be asking for more school funding for growing schools and for teachers’ salaries.

The governor has said he will not be asking for any new taxes this session. He calls the 2009 budget a “limited growth” budget, meaning any agency that asks for more money in the coming year needs to have a real good reason why they need it.

In his budget address, Gov. Rounds said, “I’m asking that we take $4.6 million out of our budget reserve to balance our budget for the 09 cycle.”

Do you think it’s a good idea to dip into the reserves?

What issues will you be watching, if any, in the upcoming legislative session?

I will be watching the mistake of a bill that is being introduced to ban guns from all state college campuses. It amazes me that people can not seem to grasp that a “gun-free zone” only really means “target of opportunity” to a thug intent on mayhem. We have to stark contrasts to see what happens when law abiding gun owners are allowed to exercise their constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. The Va Tech massacre where a lone murderer arme with two small caliber handguns was able to empty both guns and reload while killing 32 people and wonding many others virtually un-opposed. And, the story of Jeane Assam, where another criminal armed with a high volume semi automatic assualt weapon, was stopped far short of the destruction intended by a law abiding gunowner and carrier. Now, taking the two circumstnances into account, where would have rather been on those fateful days?
