Overweight kids

March 24th, 2007 by Alica

We sure hear a lot in the media these days about overweight kids. Lots of schools have put in juice and milk vending machines and have taken out the pop machines. Some states are considering banning the use of trans fats in restaurants. In Sioux Falls and other places, community groups are creating exercise programs for kids so they become more active.

What brought us to this state? Was it air conditioning that kept people indoors in the summer? Was it television that encouraged kids to sit in one spot for long periods at a time? Was it computers, for the same reason? Was it the convenience of processed foods?

And what is the solution? What can we do in addition to the things mentioned above? For years, I’ve been a strong advocate of chores for children. There is always plenty of housework and yard work to be done. What kinds of things do you do in your home to combat the cursed calorie?

I believe all of your reasons above are to blame. Times have changed and not only do we have overweight children, but too much violence, not enough innocence, and not enough discipline. I wish things were the way they were when I was a kid. It was still challenging to raise children but not near to the extent it is now.

I’ve often talked to my friend about how we make things too easy for our kids these days. I think she’s right, and I’m guilty of it. I want my kids to “have it better than I did” But am I really doing what’s best for them?

Because of the things you mentioned above…have our kids lost their imagination, their energy? Have they gotten lazier?

But, back to your original statement that states are trying to govern fat content….I don’t think our government can solve this problem, the people have to. Where’s the line for the government taking away freedoms with their legislation? Should we let them mandate how we live our lives? Ban fat, ban smoking, raise taxes on tobacco. How about banning alcohol (we tried that once)or guns, or everything else that’s bad for us? Freedoms like these are what America is all about.

Ultimately ,we make bad decisions because we are human. We also are responsible for our own actions and are paying the price with our over indulgence.

I agree with your idea of more chores for our kids, I’m making a committment to increase my kids chore list!

I think one of the main contributors to childhood obesity is both video and computer games. In the summer, kids can spend hours ‘mastering’ their favorite virtual world. Prior to their advent, I think kids spent more time playing outside or with alternate activities. I don’t think TV itself is quite as addicting.

    Overweight kids

Nearly one in four children are overweight in the U.S. If your child is one of
them, it’s time to do something about it. You as the parent have the responsibility to control your child’s eating habits and activities.
Not sure if your child is overweight, click the link below for free results.

Tips for Parents to help their overweight child:
    · Reduce their time playing video games and watching television, which are both sedentary activities.
    · Be active with your child whether it be bicycling, walking, bowling or a hike in the park.
    · You be the role model by eating healthy foods and limiting unhealthy snacks in the house.
    · Try to limit your eating out habits and make more nutritious meals at home.
    · Give them healthy snacks like frozen yogurt, pumpkin or sunflower seeds, dried fruits, nuts, angel food cake topped with strawberries or breads and crackers made with enriched flour and whole grains, served with fruit spread or fat-free cheese
