Parks

July 14th, 2010 by Alica

The city continues to upgrade city parks. Aspen Park has been undergoing a five-year plan of upgrades, and Pioneer Park recently got a picnic shelter.

Do you go to the city parks? If so, what activities do you enjoy there?

If you don’t use the parks, why not? Do you mind that your tax dollars help maintain and upgrade the parks even though you don’t use them?

What amenities would you like to see in the parks that aren’t there now? Statues? Fountains? More picnic tables? More playground equipment?

Some people would like a park on the east side of town, east of the river. Are you one of those people? What kind of park would you like there?

We do use the parks in Brandon. Brandon does have a couple nice parks. We do need a park out in the country club area. There are a lot of kids out in the area but because of river, bridge and traffic, there no safe route for the kids to get to McHardy Park. McHardy Park is within an easy biking/walking distance but because of the traffic on Aspen and not much of a shoulder on the road, there no safe way for the kids to get to the park from the east side of the river. When we purchased the land for our new home out by George Boom Funeral Home in the Sunrise Estate addition, we were told there would be a park. We were told developers of new areas were required to put in a park with help from the city. We were also told the soccer fields would be between the development and our housing development. The soccer fields were placed at McHardy Park. The “park” that the city built consists of a sidewalk that doesn’t go anywhere and a few trees (maybe 10) along the sidewalk. The sidewalk runs behind the row of houses on the south edge of the development. The “park” has houses on one side of the sidewalk and a field on the other side. The sidewalk is only about 2 blocks long and 3 feet wide. If you don’t live out in this area, you wouldn’t even know the sidewalk is there. The entrance to our “park” is at the east end of Rachelle Ave (short little street when you turn east on Chestnut by the church). You’ll have to look close to see where the “park” is because there is no marking of any kind. It looks like part of the backyards of the people who live in that row of houses.

This area needs a real park with some playground equipment a couple picnic tables and ideally a bike route to connect the two halves of the town.

I think this is a great idea.

We live close to the Big Sioux so that puts us close to alot. Bike path, playground, disc golf, river, etc.

Having lived in larger cities, one thing I miss in our parks is landscaping. They seem to be grass and trees, but what about flower beds, statues, water features, and so on. That would really spruce up our existing parks.
