Peddlers

May 21st, 2009 by Alica

Have you had any peddlers stopping at your house yet this spring? If so, what were they selling?

Did you know that peddlers aren’t allowed to solicit on your property if you post a “No Peddlers Allowed” sign?

Have you ever bought anything from a door-to-door peddler? I’ve had fruit sales come past my house, meat sales … one time a guy wanted to sell me a cheap looking painting. He had some lame story about how he had to get rid of it because he needed the money for something-or-other.

Of course, there are the kids who come by selling products to raise funds for their club or organization. I always worry about them going door to door, and I’m always relieved when I see a parent with them.

How do you feel about peddlers?

I was not aware that registered peddlers could come around till 9:00p.m. and on sundays.. if one comes to my house on a sunday, they ‘WILL GET” a severe tongue lashing from me. Just as tele-marketers do. Nice to know about the signs, Mine will be going up shortly, just like my sign for the garage that states “THIS IS A SMOKING GARAGE” !

I always ask if they have a peddlers license first. That always seems to scare them away!

By and large peddlers are like telemarketers who actually show up at your house. If I wanted to buy something I would go out and do it.

Some of these people are ok, some are not. How do you tell the diffrence? I ask to see their peddler permit and SD sales tax license. If they can’t provide it, don’t buy from them and call the cops right away.

Of course they’ll just get a ticket, and since most of them are from out of state they will never pay it or show up for court. If they are taken to jail they don’t even have to post a bond; just sign a paper saying they agree to show up for court. Then they don’t. Maybe our judges need to take these door to door conmen more seriously and require some money down to enure they will show up for court.
