Pet peeve du jour

July 29th, 2008 by Alica

Today let’s talk about pet peeves. What is your pet peeve today? Here’s mine:

Toilet paper dispensers, in public restrooms, that are hung so I have to reach darn near down to my ankle to reach the paper. And then if a paper tail isn’t conveniently hanging loose, I have to try to bend my hand back upward to reach the roll. I can’t count how many times I’ve scratched my wrist on the serrated edge of the paper dispenser.

Why do installers put these dispensers so low? Do they think I have long ape arms? Is it some kind of twisted joke? I’m guessing most of the people who install these things are men. Are the paper dispensers in men’s restrooms hung down next to the floor also?

Anyway, that’s my pet peeve. If you ever have occasion to install one of those big, round toilet paper dispensers, please hang it waist high, not knee high.

  1. 4Ever in Brandon Says:

My pet peeve for today. The city spends a ton of money to lay sod along Holly Blvd. for the new road. It looked great. Now it’s full of weeds growing over the curb and over the sidewalk. Some of the weeds are 1-2 feet tall. Whether it’s the city’s responsibility or that of the adjoining landowner, someone needs to take care of that as it looks like hell.

  2. Anonymous Says:

My pet peeve is about people bitchin about weeds.

  3. Phil Says:

My pet peeve is developer who do not taking care of their unsold lots.

  4. Mary Says:

What’s up with the blue house along Holly with huge weeds?? Is it vacant or what?

  5. Anonymous Says:

My pet peeve is not the pets , but the person walking there pet and letting the pet crap in my front yard and not picking it up.. Since i am the one that has to pick it up, don’t be surprised if one day i run up behind you and hand you a bag full of crap.. Then you will know for sure who i am… Just a friendly reminder.. Have a nice day !!!!!

  6. 4Ever in Brandon Says:

Funny comeback, #2. Now be a good citizen and go cut your weeds.

  7. whoop it up... Says:

Unorganization and inefficiencies. Yep, I definately have a Type A personality!

  8. Anonymous Says:

It wasn’t meant to be funny #6. Maybe you should be a good citizen and do something about what you are complaining about. Get of your ass and GO PULL SOME WEEDS THEN!

Typical post on this brandon blog. Always someone complaining about how bad things are in Brandon. Get a life.

  9. Funny! Says:

My boyfriend and I frequently walk on Holly Blvd and he almost has to physically restrain me from pulling them! In fact, one day I couldn’t resist and pulled a big nasty weed. Isn’t there some city ordinance that can be enforced? My dad had his trailer towed from the street while he was out of town for a weekend and yet they allow this eye sore on Holly Blvd? It is embarrassing!

  10. Sara S Says:

My pet peeve is the semi traffic still rolling by on Holly. Why isn’t the PD enforcing the no truck route?

If they would crack down and start writing big huge tickets they would stop doing it. It would be nice to be semi free by the time school starts.

  11. Anonymous Says:

    #4 Mary,

I agree -what an eye sore. Also one on 7th - mows their grass onto Holly Blvd –just an article not long ago about that being illegal — open your eyes lawmakers.
Yellow house close to Aspen Blvd and 5th or 6th Ave. Weeds, grass over 2 feet tall. Nice view for people coming to Brandon this weekend. It would be nice if the “city” didn’t ignore their “own” ordinances/laws.

  12. Pet Peever Says:

My Pet Peeves have nothing to do with weeds, or the city sorry.
Pet Peeve #1 - What the heck happened to Domino’s? Open one day, gone the next. Not slamming the Ranch, but nice to have a choice and sometimes prefer Dominoes. Pet Peeve #2 - The constant bitterness in this very small community, very few people are nice anymore, and finally Pet Peeve #3 - People who are on this blog without using their own name, I think that is cowardly. Crap, I’m guilty of that dammmit! I’m caught.

  13. 4Ever in Brandon Says:

Thanks for the advice #8. But I’m already off my ass and busy keeping my own little corner of Brandon mowed and trimmed. I have pride in how my town looks. How about you?

  14. Anonymous Says:

Good for you 4EVER for keeping a nice lawn. My point is not necessarily just about you and your weed gripe. It is about how this blog seems to constantly bring about complaints from citizens about things in Brandon. It makes us look bad.

Maybe you should “take action” and start a task force related to your weed concern on Holly. Get some volunteers to take care of the problem and help the city out. Heck, I might even volunteer and help pull those weeds you are talking about. I bet #9 would help also!

And of course the moderator starts a topic that fuels these negative comments. Where are the blog topics about the good things in this town?

Sure, I have pride in our town. I think our town looks fine. Supposedly, the original and most deadliest of the 7 sins is pride.

  15. Defender Says:

To Alica’s defense, she has tries to to start positive blogs topics such as Camping, Books, and the 2008 Olympics….notice they have very few, if any, comments!

  16. Jim Says:

The blog is for pet peeves. Some people have put down some of their pet peeves and I am sorry if you feel it is complaining, I don’t think it is. I also think Holly look a little tacky. I know the City hires extra people in the summer they can probably take care of the weed issue. I also agree that developers and home owners should take care of their property. The reason for this is to keep noxious weeds and rodents down and also it looks better. I will also defend Alica, this gets the grips out and hopefully fixed. Thanks Alica.

  17. Fear Of Reprisal Says:

Let’s start with a city council more concerned about personal interests than what is best for the city, i.e. irresponsible zoning issues, a completely biased ambulance ordinance, for example.

Toss in a few excessively vocal people that apparently do not know fact from fiction, but somehow manage to get themselves front and center with every issue. The scarey part is that people actually listen to this drivel, even though this select few has no experience or credibility. I won’t use names, because we all know who they are.

Add a steady dose of people that love to gossip, regardless of whether there is any basis for truth, and regardless of who gets hurts in the process.

Finally, complete the picture with a select few wealthy families that pretty much run the city.

And there you have it: My pet peeve is what Brandon has become. Twenty years ago I was very proud to call this place home. My house just sold. All I can see now is Brandon in my rearview mirror and I cannot say I am in the least disappointed.

  18. Randy Says:

    Goodbye!!!

  19. Phil Says:

    # 17, sorry you feel that way and I hope you find your Shangri-La. I have lived in Brandon for twenty years also and before that in another small town. I also have friend that live in Sioux Falls and Omaha and guess what they are all the same. I love living in Brandon.

Are some thing that frustrate me, YES, but they are very few, examples developers not keeping up their lots and some drainage issues. But overall, that is pretty good.

We are not complaining because our kids can not go out at night because of the over whelming crime and drugs. We are not complaining about City officials being arrested for corruption. We are talking about stuff that all can be fixed.

I don’t know what bad experience you have had with the City, but I have been dealing with them on this drainage issue and they are working with us on this and the contractor is supposed to start Monday.

  20. Just Me Says:

My pet peeve is cell phones while driving and wose yet…texting while driving…there is no way your eyes are on the road when you are texting

  21. Just Me Says:

wait…I have one more…people that hang toilet paper up the wrong way….you must have the end pull from the top ….lol…and I am anal enough to sometimes change others

  22. concerned Says:

My peeve is when the city engineer, during business hours, is mowing the lawn of the apartments on Sandstone, or just off of Holly, I hope the city is being paid for his work there. Or is he part owner. I thought my taxes were paying him to work for the city not his own interests in the apartments. No wonder the apartments got slipped in under the citizens of Brandon, especially when the original site plan, that was approved by zoning and the city council, had twin homes and 4 plexes on the lot.

Maybe just Maybe the city council, or engineer, can get the owners to put in the trees as they said they would do on the south side, and get them to fix the drainage ditch so that their neighbors to the south do not have to worry about their back yards eroding away. The owners told the residents of the Eagle Creek subdivision they would do this during a city council meeting.

  23. always listening Says:

That individual you see mowing is the city building inspector not the engineer, ask your city council member about it!!!!

  24. concerned Says:

Thanks for the clarification apparently I was wrong. But the question looms is the city being paid for his services mowing the lot.

  25. english songbird Says:

My pet peeve: lack of customer service. It seems that nobody is demanding it, so nobody gives it. However, today I was in TruValue & that customer service is always AWESOME. Thank you, Eric, for your wonderful staff.

  26. Pet Peever Says:

I have another one. No, it still isn’t weeds or drainage or the city. But it does have to do with visual polution, and I know I’m going to get a virtual thrashing for this, but please hear me out and consider. Don’t you hate campaign time when the yards and lots are littered with signs “Vote for XYZ”, “Elect ABC”, yada yada yada. We will be hit with those times soon enough, it that alone is a pet peeve, but the most recent one and unneccessary visual pollution is the “Buy Brandon” Campaign signs everywhere. While I agree with the idea, and support the premise wholeheartedly and understand what message is trying to be delivered. ENOUGH ALREADY!! How long will those be littering the yards, sidewalks and lots of our city? Let the ripping begin.

  27. Good Grief Says:

My pet peeve is all the whining and crying. Get off your —- and show up at some council meetings instead of just posting another meaningless comment. Oh I forgot, thats the point. To answer Pet Peever, “those signs will be there until they are replaced with still more signs, or blow away into your yard, or just rot and fall where they are, or maybe we could put em with the rock pile in Pioneer Park where they can be used for decoration around the pretty orange construction barriers.” Thanks Alicia I feel better already.

  28. Sara S Says:

Lighten up “good grief” The topic is pet peeves. Not who goes or doesn’t go to council meetings. This is a venue for discussion, complaining, education or anything else the editors or bloggers choose. Don’t like it? Don’t come here.

  30. Blinded Says:

My pet peeve is when people drive with their brights on, and fail to flip them off when passing other cars. It happens often, and almost resulted in my hitting a deer just outside Brandon on Holly/Rice.

I wish more people would be considerate, and turn off their brights when passing oncoming traffic. It only takes a second.

  31. Just wondering... Says:

My lights always appear to be on bright. The newer vehicles with halogen bulbs shine rather bright. They are super to drive with at night but they are obnoxious to other drivers. Sorry!

  32. Adam Says:

My pet peeve…people who bitch and moan, about their pet peeves, on blogs!! If you have a problem with something in Brandon why don’t you talk to a city official, personally?! Blogging about it, anonymously, does not get anything done! It seems that so many of you “bloggers” have so much wisdom to give to this community…yet you do it over a “blog”…under a fake name. If you really want something changed in our community, have the guts to do it in person. Don’t post it on a blog under an anonymous name! You accomplish nothing. Just thought I would put my “2 cents in”…even though I ended up “blogging” myself…I’m ashamed.

  33. Anonymous 1 Says:

My pet peeve is when the toilet paper roll is bent and it won’t spin correctly when needed. Ane when someone puts in on under the roll instead of over the roll!
