Pigskin Classic

July 31st, 2007 by Alica

Let’s consider for a moment combining Brandon’s city celebration with the Pigskin Classic. Not as competing celebrations, but as partners.

Think about it. Brandon’s identity is mostly tied up with the school. The events that draw the biggest crowds in Brandon are the school events.

The Pigskin Classic can still be the Booster Club’s biggest fundraiser. Maybe Brandon Days, or Hometown Days, or whatever it will be called, could include events that blend with the Pigskin theme, or school theme, or kids theme. Maybe Brandon’s celebration could be a big back-to-school celebration.

It’s just a thought that might be worth some consideration.

That was suggested at one of the meetings, but was agreed upon that is the Booster’s big weekend/fundraiser of the year. We don’t want to step on anyone’s toes. How about combining it with homecoming? Now that seems more realistic and wouldn’t interfere with any club’s fundraising. The celebration could go all week long, highlighting the sporting and other school events throughout the week, the coronation Thursday night, possibly a “Homecoming Parade,” the football game, etc. On Saturday, the community events could be held … also some food for thought.

A citywide homecoming party. That’s worth some discussion, for sure. Good idea.

    Homecoming … coming home … hometown …

It could be a way to get newer residents to feel like Brandon is their hometown. And it might draw some alumns back into town for the weekend.

Augustana College always has class reunions, of selected classes, during its homecoming week.
