Prom

I remember going to my prom in my junior year with a group of girlfriends. We went to Ming Wah for dinner, and then we went to the dance. I don’t recall dancing. We girls had a good time. In my senior year, I stopped in at the prom dance briefly — 15 minutes maybe. Other than that, I don’t have any big prom memories.
However, the kids these days make the day very special. They get fancy clothes, rent limos and basically go all out. There is even an overnight trip to Worlds Of Fun amusement park in Kansas City.
How do you think today’s proms compare to the ones you had when you were in high school? Do you think the event is worth all the expense kids go to? If you were to plan prom, how would you do it differently?
Or do you think prom is a perfect blend of fun and frill, and you wouldn’t change a thing?

I think they’ve turned it into something very close to their future wedding. The dress, the hair, the nails, the tan, the shoes, the accessories, the limo…..I also think there’s nothing special left for when they’re grown ups. They’ve all been there, done that.
I also think it’s ridiculous when a limo pulls up to the grade school/middle school for “graduation” or a birthday party.

It certainly would be nice if the BRANDON Valley High School prom was actully held in BRANDON. Novel concept! I also agree with poster #1 - proms have gotten out of hand (not just Brandon).
I also don’t think the after prom party is necessary. Many of the kids still partake in inappropriate behavior between the end of the dance and the trip. Kudos to the parents for trying though.
I think it would be nice to move the prom to Brandon (HS, Golf course, or new event center) and have a lock-in directly after prom. It would keep kids in town and possibly prevent a driving accident. It would also be fun for the juniors to host a dinner for the seniors before the prom. This might encourage a more “hometown” feeling.
My kids never participated in prom (their choice) as it was just another dance. Nothing special. They found other special trips to do with friends.

Not sure, but I do not think there is a place in Brandon that can accomadate that many people (kids)…

They have the homecoming and winter formal dances in the high school. All grades (9-12) attend those dances. Prom is only for 11-12 (plus a few extra’s if they bring a “date” from another grade/school).
I agree there probably isn’t enough space in Brandon for all attendees to have a meal together. In my high school all of the seniors (& dates)shared “one last” meal together. It made the night a lot more special.
Luverne kids (not sure if they still do) had their meal out at one of the nursing homes, with the “seniors”. Neat idea. The “seniors” got to have a special night and also had fun seeing all of the kids dressed up.

If memory serves, we had a dinner in the Brandon Valley High School gym for prom when I was a junior. (The dance was held at another location.) I’m not sure if the juniors sponsored the dinner for the seniors or not.
During the dinner, the seniors “willed” things to the juniors. It was all in fun.

That does sound like fun Alica! It sounds like your prom had a bit more of that “hometown” feeling I wish BVHS’s prom had.
Our prom was held in our HS gym while our meal was held at the Country Club. We “seniors” were “roasted” by the junior class committee members….It too was all in fun.

I don’t know, I thought Prom was a lot of fun when I was in school in the late 90’s. We had it at the Shrine Mosque just like this year. I wish we’d have a Grand March. I never understood why they don’t. We rented a limo my senior year with some friends and ate at Minervas. I don’t think it made my wedding 4 years later any less of an experience (even if it was with the same man). I say, let em celebrate! I also think the after party is a great idea. My junior year they went to World’s of Fun (I chose not to) and we had a lockin at the high school my senior year. We got home finally at about 5am and just crashed on that Sunday. I will say that moving it to Friday night was probably a good idea. It helps that there’s no school that day though.

To #7: Were you in the same grade as either of my kids? Andrea Thiele Class of 96, or Allen Thiele Class of 98?

Yeah, I graduated with Allen. My husband’s parents live down the street from you…
