Public forum

February 12th, 2007 by Alica

According to the Feb. 5 Brandon City Council minutes, the city will hold a public forum on the proposed ambulance ordinance on Wednesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at the Brandon Municipal Golf Course community room.

You could think of the meeting as an opportunity to learn more about the proposed ordinance, but why not go into the meeting more prepared? Read the ordinance before the meeting and decide ahead of time what questions you would like to ask. The ordinance is available to read here on this blog, and also on the city Web site, www.brandonsd.com. From the main page of the city’s Web site, click on “Legal Notices” in the left-hand column. The .pdf file of the ambulance ordinance, #381, will be at the top of the list that appears. Or just go to http://brandon.govoffice.com/vertical/Sites/{23CB10F0-8C35-4CA4-9AD1-B693F0F58E76}/uploads/{1F0B7A7E-1F2B-4689-9AE1-1735BC970543}.PDF.

I suggest that you think of the meeting as an opportunity to learn more about why the City Council approved the ordinance and why they think residents should vote for it on April 10. How does Ordinance #381 benefit the residents of Brandon? What are the advantages of this ordinance over the one the city now follows, which is the Minnehaha County ordinance? The county ordinance can be found at the county Web site, www.minnehahacountry.org, then, under “Information,” click on “County Ordinances” and then on “Licensing Surface Ambulance Service.” Or just go to http://www.minnehahacounty.org/information/county_ordinances/licensing_surface_ambulance/MC31-021.pdf.

will there be a visible announcement somewhere so people know about this meeting, or will it be buried in the legal section of the paper?

  2. Paul Vander Bleese Says:

You know what, you expect government to come to your house with a band and trumpets and singing cats to tell you about meetings.

THE ONLY THING IN THE LEGALS SECTION IS STUFF ABOUT GOVERNMENT MEETINGS!!!!!

You want a car? You look in the classifieds. You want to know where to find a meeting, look in the legals.

Meeting times NEVER CHANGE. If you can’t figure out when a meeting is, it’s because you’re too foolish to know where to look.

I’d like to point out that the March 7 meeting is a special meeting, not a regular meeting. So, special notice might be beneficial.

I do agree with you that residents are responsible for getting involved in their local government. That includes reading the legal notices (which are published by law for the public’s benefit), attending meetings, voting and the like.

I hope lots of people attend the meeting March 7.

  4. Concerned Says:

Paul, she wasn’t asking when city council meetings were…she was asking if the forum would be advertised in the paper. There is also a tentative one set for March 14 with the Chamber 7:oo pm at the Middle School. Word will be getting out about these 2 events.

  5. citizen Says:

Good grief Paul, you think you overreacted just a bit? And no need to to “yell.” Obviously I know about the meeting, so yes I read the legals. But many do not. And special meeting times DO change. Why so defensive? Thank you “concerned” for saying the information will be getting out, I appreciate it.

I received an interesting item in the mail yesterday….our council person, Brett Karber working along side Med-Star Ambulance and sending out polical information? Doesn’t that seem a bit odd? Wouldn’t you think that our council should remain nuetral on this issue and not be out supportting a business? I thought the ordiance (381) was for licensing and not just to allow one service in?

  7. citizen Says:

    Concerned,
Now you’re seeing the real motivation here. I was wondering how long it would take for people to see the true propaganda involved in this issue. Odd…no, because this has been going on since the conception. Yes, one would think our council should remain neutral, but they haven’t been neutral from the beginning. Ever really think about why certain items were changed in the ordinance? Put some thought to that and ask some serious questions of our council at the meeting tomorrow night. (golf course) There are reasons some on the council will not openly admit to… in my opinion. Your last statement says it all. Spread the word about the meeting.

    Thank You
