Rifles

July 6th, 2010 by Alica

Brandon Police are replacing their shotguns with semi-automatic rifles. Police Chief Dave Kull said it’s part of a nationwide trend to keep up with the kinds of firearms bad guys use (my words, not his).

Do you think this is a good idea? The guns cost about $1,000 each, and the department bought seven of them. They will keep the shotguns for now.

What do you think of this move? Do you think it is a smart idea? Do you think it’s worth the money?

I hope they’ll never need to use the shotguns or the rifles in Brandon. I would have them carry both. I can see where you might need a rifle versus a shotgun. I think they should have the option to use the best weapon for the situation they face - and the training to pick the right weapon.

I guess I’m not real sure why someone would be opposed to the officers carrying rifles. They also carry handguns, pepper spray, batons and AED’s and other medical equipment. It is just another tool to help them better protect our community. They probably don’t use a lot of their equipment on a daily basis but would you want to be caught without it. It’s kind of like paying for life insurance; we pay it all our lives in hopes to never have to use it.

The police hardly even ever use their hand guns…what the hell would they need assault rifles for? If it came to a situation where something like that needed to be used, wouldn’t a team of swat or something come in and take over. A team that is more trained in situations where assault rifles were needed. Another waste of money. And wade looked great in the paper holding one. (Sarcasm)

It’s obvioulsy a great idea and long over due. The Police, in many small towns and cities have been out gun for years. Don’t think for a minute that Brandon is not acceptable to violent crime. It’s better to be well prepared and trained, then waiting for something real bad to happen, then decide they needed the weapons. The Police need these weapons for many reasons, especially to respond to “an active shooter” at a school or anywhere. God forbid if it ever happens. By the time a swat team arrives, it maybe to late. That’s why the weapons are needed.
