Snow removal

January 16th, 2007 by Alica

How is snow removal going on your street? My street wasn’t cleared as quickly as it usually is. And I was surprised the snow hadn’t been cleared at the corner of Sioux and Holly boulevards (by Casey’s) by 8 a.m. yesterday. It was kind of a slippery corner as I turned west to go to work.

In any case, I hope this cold weather lets up real soon. I bet you do too.

I think the City of Brandon has the best “Snow Fighting Team” in the state.

How may cities this size can get the streets cleared in 6-12 hrs after a snow event?

How many times have you seen streets in the Sioux Falls residential areas that have not been plowed for up to 3 days after a storm?

I also would like to compare the accidents due to weather with other cities.

Give the City staff a big “GOOD JOB” the next time you see them.

Agreed 100%, and that’s why I was surprised the other day when the snow wasn’t cleared as promptly as usual.

On another snow-related note, I heard once that it costs five times as much to remove snow from a cul-de-sac as from a regular street. Is that true?

I wouldn’t say it was 5 times, but is more expensive than a regular street. One report I have heard that a suburb of St. Paul, Mn. recorded that the cul-de-sacs made up 15% of their streets, and it took 51% of the snow budget to clean them.

just wondering if the bluffs has their own homeowners association to take care of snow removal. if the city takes care of it, i’d sure like to know why the streets out there were cleared very well before 6 am and those of us in the main part of the city were left till last..seems like the outer edges should be the last cleared or does money talk

The city plowed the entire city last Sunday without hiring the contractor. In doing so the normal routes were changed. Also I would estimate the city saved around $500-800 dollars by doing the entire city. I took only 4 hours longer than a normal plow to accomplish this. I would submit that this was a good decision on the public works department. And yes, “Money Talks” when we can save some tax dollars.
