S.T.A.T.

December 17th, 2009 by Alica

A group of high school kids have taken it upon themselves to organize activities for teens that do not include alcohol or drugs. They have had a roller skating party and have gone to a corn maze. They plan to do some community service projects, too.

Some people might applaud these kids and their can-do attitude. Some folks might think that these kids deserve a hand for promoting activities that involve clean, fun activities.

Other folks might wonder what the world is coming to, if kids are getting special recognition for doing what they should be doing in the first place – behaving themselves, following the law and helping others.

What are your thoughts?

It is too bad that there has now been a negative spin placed on a positive storyline. This is why I get extremely frustrated with the media. Why not report the positive? Oh, yeah! Because no one cares. Good job kids and keep it up! Role models for others you are and know that parents like me support you wholeheartedly!

WE moved here several years ago and have had a hard time finding things for our teens to do that are safe especially through the winter.
No, they can’t find things to do without some help, they are only kids. As parents we are so busy working or having our own lives that we don’t see how bored they are sometimes. They need to have things that are their own without us parents butting in. All the sports for them are great but we are too much in there too. They need some things that are their own. A Rec. center would be great with some activities. A quiet room where they can study, a room where they can play music and talk or have a soda, a place where they can safely be kids. A different place than school. Just my thoughts and what I have seen other towns do accross the country.

To #2: When you say “kids,” are you talking about high school-age teens, or younger children?

I’d like to say the high schoolers. I feel it would be the middle schoolers who would really use it. High school is a funny age. If they think the place is cool, they’ll go, if there’s too many younger ones around they may not go. I’d like to say a place just for teens. What really would happen is any body’s guess. They would probably like a place that feels like a coffee house. Am I making sense?

well….smoking a good fat swisher sweet filled to the brim with dank buds while driving around town bumping the newest and dopest lil wayne is what the real after school activities are!!

To #2, Welcome to South Dakota…The home of, “If you ain’t drinking while you are doing it, then nobody will show up”. That sadly is the idea behind many events in the Sioux Falls area. If you take a look at all the major events during the year, you will have to search really hard for one that does not involve people getting drunk, including teenagers. But, that is just the way it has always been and sadly that is the attitude of most people in political and monetary control of our state………Happy New Year
