Summer Rec

Did you go to Summer Rec in Brandon when you were a kid? Do your kids go now?
Summer Rec is free and is at the tiled gym in Brandon Elementary. Kids can come and go as they please. While they’re there, they can play games such as foosball, ping pong or board games. They can make crafts. They can just hang out and visit with their friends.
In addition, Summer Rec takes a few field trips each summer.
The city (meaning the taxpayers) pay the summer rec staff and cover other expenses. Sometimes there are small user fees, depending on the activity.
Do you think Summer Rec is a good idea? What memories do you have of it, if you went? What have your kids said about it? Do you think some people use it as a cheap or free babysitter for their kids?

I have great memories of summer rec…a “beautiful dog” contest, tennis lessons, busing to swimming lessons in Garretson (before the Brandon pool)FUN stuff in the gym. Great program…maybe it will evolve into a program similar to YES in Sioux Falls.

I remember those pet contests. I photographed many of them for the Brandon Valley Challenger.
I remember one year there was a great big snake.

I remember the swimming lessons in Luverne, field trips, and those pet contests too, thru my kids.
When they would yell, going out the door, “I’m going to rec.!”
You knew they would be back at noon and probably back there at one.
Great times. It was well worth it. A great program. I am sure
it still is.
Oh, and tennis lessons at the old courts, which is now the skateboard/skating rink. My
daughter would go over in her
jellies. (those plastic shoes)
Of which, she will never hear the end of…

I went to Summer Rec too as a kid! It was convenient because we lived on Main at the time. I remember going to craft time in the morning and making cool stuff. The bus trips to Luverne for swimming lessons and the pet contest were always fun for us too. I think they had a bus trip to Carosel Skate once too. I hope that when my kids are old enough to go that we’ll live IN Brandon and they can enjoy the program too!
