Sunday liquor sales

December 2nd, 2008 by Alica

By January, you might be able to buy a bottle of wine at the grocery store on Sunday.
The city council is considering allowing off-sale Sunday liquor sales. They’ve passed a first reading and plan to hold the second reading Dec. 15. If it were approved and following publication Dec. 24, the ordinance would go into effect Jan. 14, 2009, allowing off-sale liquor sales from 7 a.m. until midnight on Sundays.

Allowing off-sale liquor sales on Sunday was spurred by similar measures recently taken by the city of Sioux Falls.

Sunday sales might come in handy if you suddenly decide to make a rum cake after church. But some people might say that if you plan ahead, you easily can make sure you purchase your liquor in advance of your need for it.

What do you say?

I think it’s a great idea! Now if we could just get the state to pass a bill that allows me to receive and send wine from out of state, I’d be giddy. I have no idea why that law or this one is still on the books.

    GREAT JOB, BRANDON CITY COUNCIL!!!

You have to be able to get your booze, how could anybody in this area do anything without it. This is just another fine example of how the Sioux Falls area communities are reliant on alcohol. Very few events in the area are not based around alcohol and the sale of alcohol..Sad

Why stop at midnight? or is 12:01 on Monday already ok?

Why? Why? Why? Why does the city need to buy booze at a liquor store on sunday? Most of our fine citizens are at the bars during sporting events anyway. Heck i can think of 3 bars in the area that sponser or promote the Brandon Valley Schools….”GO LYNX”. This is wrong. What a message to send to our youth. Hard enough to temper the abuse of alcohol by high school students as it is. Lets quit trying to be like sioux falls and try being more like a community of our own.

Does anyone else find it a bit confusing that the BV Booster Club recently sponsered a “Winter Sports Kick Off” event which included alcohol? It was held at the Pizza Ranch. Shouldn’t something like that be held at the school? I agree with with #4 above, wrong message to our kids.

Thanks 4 & 5 — I don’t understand why the Booster Club always has to have their get-together in the “back” of Pizza Ranch — beer and pizza specials.
Definitely the wrong message — even if the members are old enough to drink. Kids need to know that it is acceptable to socialize without having alcohol involved to make it “fun”.

It would be great to see some changes to the Booster Club “get-togethers”

I remember back when I was in college and the student newspaper ran ads from a local pool hall during Homecoming week. The ads didn’t mention liquor, just food and pool. But of course the establishment did sell liquor.

A bunch of faculty got very upset that the student newspaper would encourage drinking (even indirectly).

The newspaper pointed out that the Booster Club program for the college’s football games had liquor store ads that listed prices for kegs, and one that even used the slogan “Beer is good food.”

The controversy lasted the rest of the semester. It was quite a deal.
