The legacy left by Phil Youngdale

November 7th, 2007 by colson

This Saturday the community will say farewell to Police Chief Phil Youngdale at an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Brandon Fire Hall.
The longtime chief leaves his job later this month after 25 years.
What will be the Youngdale legacty and how will the department be different without him?

Phil certainly will be missed. He is a man of honor and integrity. I hope the mayor finds the same qualities in the new chief of police. Happy retirement Phil!!

with Wade being the new interim police chief we may want to look at the perks that he is already getting. on Saturday night NOV. 3rd what do you see pull up in front of sneakers bar a police cruiser with (2) officers in it and the interim chief get in the back to get a ride home from the bar. Good for him for not driving home, but why cant he call home to get a ride from his wife. so if i need a ride home from the bar does that mean that i can call the police department and get a ride since i am a tax payer also. if thats the case that is great. i see this as a new policy on public relations. GREAT IDEA WADE

#2 Is there any chance that we could leave just one blog category for positive comments?

  4. Confused Says:

When we first moved to Brandon from out of state, Phil was the first person that waved to my wife as she brought the kids to school. The out of state plates made it obvious we were new to Brandon, the kids going to school meant we moved here. That small gesture went a long way in making you feel welcome here. You felt like Brandon was a friendly place and the police were nice.

I agree with number #3. #2’s comments don’t belong here. I’ve already read it elsewhere.

Enjoy your retirement Phil…and yes jealousy gets you no where #2…

How do you know, Wade didnt possibly get a call from one of the officers with a question and went into work on his free time?

  7. ??? Says:

I saw Wade at the bar on Saturday night, he was by no means under the influence, but he took responsibility and got a ride home… it shouldn’t matter who gave him a ride home… he could have snuck out of the bar and drove like some of our city council members do… just a thought…

I thought those white cars with blu and red flashy lighty thingys where police cars. if i would have know they where a city owned cab company to be used by city employees that are responsible enough to get a ride home..I guess i would go out more and drink rather than being a DD. WOW the perks of working for the city of brandon sound AWESOME! Cab ride home, free golfing, free insurance after 3-4 years. Sign me up for city council and #7 if he was “in no way under the influence” then why get a ride home?

  9. Community Advisor Says:

OK now for the entire bar attendees…just dial 911 for a ride home from the bar. Compliments of the city of Brandon…..good for 1, good for all. Community policing?

  10. disgusted Says:

Seriously I am sickened that you people turned a positive blog spot for such crap. Get over it and grow up!

On a positive note and back to the original reason for this blog, Phil will be missed. He has served our community well, and I hope his replacement can fill his shoes.

I’ll tell the story again of one occasion he helped my family. When my daughter was in kindergarten, she missed the bus after school and started walking to her grandparents’ place. She walked almost a mile in below zero weather before someone called the police department.

Phil Youngdale went and got her and drove her to her grandparents’. Even though it was part of his job, I will never forget that kindness. Thank you, Phil.

Does anyone else have Phil stories to tell? I, for one, would love to hear them.

  12. Friend Says:

Phil, congratulations on your retirement. I know you have worked hard and you have done what you thought was right for Brandon. Hope you have a happy and enjoyable retirement.

  13. Lost in Rhetoric Says:

phil already had his good bye blog. this is the legacy he left behind. now he’s not the only one that has given a child a ride in winter all the PD has done that. now let me see..wade-soo not a child–at least age wise-mentally you bet. Middle of winter sub zero temps. NOT EVEN..

Lost in Rhetoric…..you sound bitter. I bet some shrink could buy a lake home off of your counseling sessions.

to #3, #4, #5. I actually did not place this comment on this blog. this one was place on a previous one and whomever manages this one moved it. Phil congrats on your retirement, it is well deserved.

  16. Alica Says:

For the record, I did see post #2 under a different heading before it appeared under this heading. I didn’t duplicate or move it, but it’s possible someone copied and pasted it here. Of course, I would not encourage that.

Any more Phil stories? I enjoyed reading comment #4.

  17. Lost in Rhetoric Says:

nice try #14…stick and stones..sticks and stones. Say what ever makes you feel better or a bigger man. I laugh at your derision. I’m flattered you singled me out. :-D am i bitter you bet. Phil was great he’s a smart and savy man and i dont blame him for leaving now i would to if i where in his position, seeing what’s going on and the downward spiral of the city leaders. so thanks again #14 for noticing me. I’ll see you at the next city council meeting ??

  18. john sittig Says:

    thank you phil.

  19. Brian Smidt Says:

Chief Youngdale I want to wish you the best of luck in retirement. I enjoyed working for you and your department. I have learned a lot from you. I hope I can do what you have done for law enforcement for 30 years. I think many people do not realize how big of accomplishment that is to put in 30 years in this line of work. I wish you the best and enjoy your retirement.

  20. HBFR Says:

This is the legacy Phil left behind, just like what #22 said in the Council briefing meeting blog, the BPD does things half assed and should also be call Almost.
