What we’re thankful for

November 21st, 2007 by Alica

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?

I just wrote a story about kids in Brandon Valley who don’t have enough food to keep their bellies full. I am thankful I have plenty of food.

A few weeks ago, I got assigned, by my bosses at the Argus Leader, to be the Brandon reporter for the Brandon Valley Challenger and the Argus. I am thankful I have a job.

A few days ago, I saw parents, teachers and administration congratulate the cheer team for winning the state title. I am thankful I live in a community with people who care.

This afternoon, I’m going to take pictures of the Brandon Lutheran Church choir practicing their upcoming cantata. I am thankful I have a faith family for spiritual support.

Tomorrow, I am going to have dinner with family members ranging from my 92-year-old grandmother to my son’s fiance. I am thankful I have family.

Two nights ago, my deceased father made an appearance in one of my dreams. I am thankful I have memories.

Yesterday at the Taco John’s drive-through, I added an extra dollar to my bill to help pay for diabetes research. I am thankful I have enough to share.

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?

Having lived in a city of 4 million people(where you are just an ant and a number), I am thankful I live in this great community of Brandon!

I like going to the Sunshine store and saying hi to about 10 people I know by first name. It really gives one a sense of family and community.

I am also thankful for my great family and friends as well as my health.

Thanks for the positive thread Alica!

I’m thankful for my family, friends. I’m also very thankful for the brave men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. I pray that they will get to have a wonderful home-cooked Thanksgiving meal next year.

I am in Kansas City for an internship. I have been here for only two days and in this time there have been five murders, seven rapes, twenty three assaults, and other crimes too numerous to mention.

I’m staying in a relatively nice area, yet I have heard gunshots, the constant smell of drugs, and music so loud the walls are rattling.

I am a mere ten miles from my work location and it takes thirty minutes to get there, even in the middle of the night.

I have been to the store twice to get supplies — both times after midnight — and it took over thirty minutes just to check out!

The air has a constant smell of car fumes, and industrial pollution.

This is not an insult to Kansas City. It is an illustration as to why I feel so lucky to live in a place like Brandon.

Maybe it is my age, or my up bringing, but I cannot wait to get home again.
